Ensuring a Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum During a Teacher Shortage

The current shortage of teachers and available substitutes is impacting all aspects of education - central office, campus administration, teaching teams, and most importantly, our students. With educators leaving the profession or unavailable for long stretches, many districts have hired alternatively certified teachers or long-term substitutes to complete their teams when necessary. While these professionals may have experience within a content area or with students in general, they are not typically experienced in curriculum writing, which ultimately presents the issue of equity among classrooms for our students. With the current reality in education, are all students receiving the guaranteed and viable curriculum they deserve?

BYOC can help districts level the playing field by centralizing resources, managing curriculum, encouraging collaboration, and providing analytics so that all students have equal access to high quality, standards-based curriculum and instructional practices. Once a district curriculum is in BYOC’s system, revisions and additions can happen year after year, but all teachers will have access to the same curriculum on day one!

Centralize Resources

With BYOC, all team members can contribute to and manage their resources in one place; therefore, all students benefit from the best lessons created over time in the district, and they can be modified as needed for future use. Some of the benefits are:

  • Newer teachers can pull from the resources created by veteran teachers and add as they are able
  • BYOC eliminates the need to individually cut and paste from paper files, pull activities from a textbook, and incorporate online sources year-by-year
  • Educators can quickly add feedback and reminder notes during instruction using the comment feature
  • Planning effective lessons is a smoother and more efficient process - teachers have time to focus on their students
  • Veteran teachers who are often tasked with gathering materials and plans for new teachers or substitutes can have that time back
  • Learning experiences and resources that are aligned to standards, most effective and engaging practices and materials can be prioritized
  • Teachers can access resources from other grade levels to fill gaps for missed instruction based on individual student needs and grouping

Manage Curriculum

Because BYOC facilitates transparent collaboration among all stakeholders, district leaders can ensure that the district curriculum is up to date and that all educators have access to plan lessons quickly and easily from that quality source. Further, principals and coaches do not need expertise in every content area to provide instructional leadership and curriculum support to struggling teachers - they simply access full curricular and instructional materials through BYOC. The activity feature ensures that districts can include a variety of learning experiences for all learning styles as well as align to several sets of standards to guarantee inclusion of English language development, employability, and SEL standards. Finally, BYOC gives district leaders the ability to reconfigure scope and sequences and pacing guides with the click of a button as well as effectively manage ever-changing standard sets.

Encourage Collaboration

With BYOC’s collaborative features, teachers can search courses within their own district, as well as other districts utilizing BYOC. This feature is particularly valuable to singleton teachers in a district or content area, those new to a subject area, or for unique courses. Students throughout the country can benefit from well-written, standards-based curriculum.

Provide Analytics

With over 40 reports designed to meet the needs of every district, teachers and administrators can make data-driven curriculum and planning decisions based on their students. BYOC identifies gaps in curriculum with the standards map report as well as creates unit reports that maximize PLC and planning time. BYOC’s analytics improve district curriculum and maximize educator work time as they allow for focused instructional and revision efforts on areas that need improvement and the ability to easily identify and replicate learning experiences and instructional strategies that have proven to be effective.
